30 Days of Night - Mike Hanson - 10-28-2007 Brrrrrr Blah! A Northern Exposure nightmare. Pretty standard fare, drawing much of its inspiration from such films as "Near Dark," "Pitch Black," and John Carpenter's "The Thing" and "Assault on Precinct 13" You can read a more detailed review at the Blog at my website. Based on a critically acclaimed 3-part comic book miniseries, this popcorn flick's upscale production values and a high body count contend for nearly two hours with weak characterizations and an occasionally slow pace. In the end, I actually enjoyed it. I give "30 Days of Night" THREE out of five cans of diet cherry vanilla Dr. Pepper. I just read in his fear.com interview that he wrote Midnight Mass to go against the 'nice' vampires of the times, and that he made them nasty again. I have not seen the film 30 Days Of Night, but I have read the comic, and they are very ugly, horrifying monsters. Not a tortured poet or sympathetic anti-hero amongst them!! ![]() mainly, I don't know what 'secular' means  30 Days of Night - Mike Hanson - 11-01-2007 bones weep tedium Wrote:Sorry Mike, what do you mean by 'secular' vampires that FPdubya would oppose? I have not seen the film 30 Days Of Night, but I have read the comic, and they are very ugly, horrifying monsters. Not a tortured poet or sympathetic anti-hero amongst them!! Hey Bones. I was referring to the fact that Paul likes traditional vampire stories, where a bloodsucker can be averted by a crucifix, and burned by holy water, among other things (a bit of an oversimplification, but there you go). Though it is never stated nor shown in this movie that such religious weaknesses don't exist for said leaches, it seems implied in their presentation. And my comment was neither a dig or a poke at FPW, but a fact. MIDNIGHT MASS was a return to the foundational mythos of the modern vampire, as made popular in Bram Stoker's Dracula. And I, for one, enjoyed it very much. Considering the easily accessible settings and limited effects needed for a big screen adaption of MASS, I have high hopes that a decently budgeted version is produced in the near future... Very long, very slow. The vampires weren't even particularly tough. I was surprised how much they left out from the comic, especially considering how hard they seemed to struggle making this feature length. If this was a jam-packed and bustling 2 hours of mayhem you'd forgive them taking stuff out from the comic, but since this film was so long and empty, beggars belief they would be so heavy handed with the source material. 30 Days of Night - Marc - 11-08-2007 While the vampire makeup was good the rest of the movie sucked. We didn't need to be reminded a dozen times in the first fifteen minutes that it was going to be dark for 30 days. The movie felt like it took place in one night. Ugh... and the comics were so good. 30 Days of Night - Auskar - 11-08-2007 bones weep tedium Wrote:I just didnt know what secular meant, is allI always get secular and non-secular mixed up, myself. Unless it is in context, I can never remember which is which. ![]() |
