Across The Universe - Mike Hanson - 10-13-2007

Wow. Talk about a head trip.

I checked out this 131 minute magical mystery tour this
morning. A musical about college-age adults in the late
1960's, set in New York City, and touching upon every
conceivable cinematic cliche to the tune and lyrics of
33 classic Beatles' songs...I've got blisters on my temporal
lobe.

You can read my longer review at the blog on my website.

Suffice it to say that The Beatles' song list, along with a
few inspired set pieces, guarantee that this eclectic mess
never quite becomes "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band,"
"Popeye," "The Return of Captain Fantastic," or "Xanadu."

I actually enjoyed it.

I give "Across The Universe," THREE out of five cans of
diet cherry vanilla Dr. Pepper.

I LOVED it!!! But I kept waiting for "Maxwell's Silver Hammer""She Came in Through the Bathroom Window""Sexy Sadie" and "Nowhere Man". Only passin references. My favorite part of this movie was the names. All of the main characters had name in Betles songs. Lucy, Jude, Prudence, Sadie(Janis Jopin take-off, and a very good one), Jo-Jo(Jimi Hendrix take off, and not bad), and Max(for Maxwell). I also loved the context. A GREAT movie, one I strongly suggest for Beatle fans. If you haven't heard the Beatles(:eekSmile, this will make you love them.

My wife and I loved it.

Across The Universe - Scott Miller - 06-19-2008

I saw it a couple of nights ago and needed a day to digest it. It scores major points for originality and some truly trippy visuals, but like Mike said earlier it tried to incorporate too much. A simpler story would have worked better for me. The acting wasn't bad, but it was secondary to the musical numbers. All the actors sang pretty well(I particularly liked Jim Sturgess) and I didn't hate the music although I still prefer listening to The Beatles sing them. If you are familiar with Julie Taymor's other stuff, you know what to expect of it.

I agree, but I knew they could not sing the songs as well as the Beatles, so it was MUCH better that what I expected. I liked how Sadie and Jojo were Janis and Jimi.Big Grin
