Renaissance - Kenji - 07-14-2007

Today, after I saw new Harry Potter movie, I saw another movie, "Renaissance". It's full CG animation, but different than other CG animation. It's black & white film noir. The movie reminded me of Blade Runner. Animation-like Blade Runner!

If this film was a live action film, it would probably be one of the worst movies of the year. However, the wonderful new animation style makes the film enthralling to look at. Beautiful, dazzling, and then characters start to talk. The animated French future noir was like a walking-talking comic book. Crisp and high contrast black & white, Renaissance could capture the feel of old film noir films from the 40s and 50s. Light and shadow were employed with astonishing effect for an animated film. The futuristic Paris was meticulously designed. It was not color film, but it was very beautiful. Smile

Was the version of Renaissance that you saw dubbed into Japanese or was it in a foreign language and subtitled?

It was a foreign language(English) and subtitled(Japanese). If it was Japanese dubbed version, I won't see it.

This is the trailer. Check it out.

Do you mean to say that if it was a Japanese dubbed version you wouldnt have wanted to see it?

Why's that?

I don't like watching dubbed films because the voices are invariably stupid. But I don't mind watching dubbed cartoons so much becasue you aren't so aware that the voice doesnt match the face. I watched Akira, SPirited Away and Princess Mononoke with English dubbing, and wasnt distracted at all.

Why? Because it's "foreign language" film.

All characters are French people (but this version I saw was English version). Well, anyway, they are French people, not Japanese people. If their language was Japanese, it's strange.

Live films or cartoons, whatever they are, I prefer subtitles version.

You sould see Akira, SPirited Away and Princess Mononoke with Japanese language and English subtitles. You'll get different feels. Smile

I was about to mention that. I have seen Akira dubbed into English, and anothe time with English subtitles. I had two completely different impressions of the film from the different translations. They were both incoherent and disjointed, but they were different nevertheless. Wink
