Below (2002) - The Mad American - 06-25-2007

Anyone seen this movie? AMC has their Sci-Friday line up in which they mostly play the normal line up of OK to bad scifi/horror movies.

Well, this last Friday night, with Gracie sleeping on my shoulder (she is getting her last teeth in, her eye teeth and they are really causing her some discomfort, so that means lots of snuggle time with Dad...not a bad thing really), I was flipping through the channels and came across this movie.

I don't remember this movie ever being in theaters or seeing a preview trailer for it, but that doesn't mean much with the state of my memory these days.

Anyway, on to the movie. It is a ghost story that takes place on an American Submarine in WWII. Without adding any spoilers I have to say I was very pleasantly surprised by this movie. It was more subtle then almost any ghost story movie I have seen recently and really played well for me.

Maybe my expectations of movies is just lowered because of all the recent garbage that is put out but I was very happy to find this little gem. Going to have to look for this one on DVD to add to my collection.

Anyone else seen this?

Oh, yes. I saw it in a theatre, and it was very chilly! What was the scary is...they can't escape. The cold water is surrounding them.

I like this movie.

Yes, I've actually watched it several times. I'm not sure I even knew what it was about when it was in theatres, but I saw it advertised when it hit cable and decided to check it out. I liked it a lot as well. Smile

I rented it when it first hit the video stores and bought it soon after. I consider it a sleeper. It wasn't a mega-buck movie but just as good. Like MA, I think it's appeal was that the storyline didn't go overboard and added a more realistic feel. Trapped on a u-boat with a pissed off poltergeist gives new meaning to, "You can run but you can't hide." Smile

I saw this a while ago. As I recall, it was really good but then started to fall apart at the end. I might be getting it mixed up with something else though. What happened at the end?

Actually I liked how it ended, so what happens is...............................

SPOILER ALERT

The story of how the main officer of the sub died comes to light, they find that he didn't fall into the water when the sub shifted as they were looking at the wreckage of the sunken German boat, but instead was killed by his junior officers when he realizes that they had mistaken a British hospital ship for a German warship and sunk it, the main officer wanted to rescue what survivors he could, the junior officers just wanted to cover it up and save their careers.....A few people survive and tell the tale at the end on a hospital ship that rescues them.

I've seen this also. I didn't hear word one about it until it was already out on DVD. I'd have to go back and check, but I think long ago when I started a thread requesting recommendations for ghost movies to watch, someone mentioned this, so I got the DVD from my local library. I liked it a lot.
