Invasion of The Body Snatchers - Kenji - 03-23-2007
Tonight, at last I saw "Invasion of The Body Snatchers"(1956) on a used videotape. As I said "at last", I've never seen this before until now. But of course I saw remake version of 1978 and 1993. I liked 1978 version (Donald Sutherland). When I first saw the 1978 version on TV, it freaked me out. Especially, Donald Sutherland's last scream.....that was shocking to me.
But now, I like original version. It's 51 years ago, nevertheless it annoyed me. Kevin McCarthy's dialogues were persuasive. "They're here already! You're next! You're next, You're next..." :eek:
1993 version had some creepy moments, but it was not scary at all. Second remake is not fresh anymore. But, surprisingly somebody's making third remake with Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig. The title is "The Invasion". Hmm....should I call it "re-re-re-make"?

Well neither of the first 2 versions ended exactly like the book. I have only seen bits and pieces of the 1993 version so I can't comment much on it.
I saw the 1978 version first and the Donald Sutherland scream at the end scared the crap out of me (I was about 12 years old). A month ago or so it was playing multiple times a week on Showtime and I watched it 3 or 4 times during that month. I'd forgotten that Kevin McCarthy had a brief cameo in it as the guy that jumps onto Donald Sutherland's car.
I think I like the original best though. Part of the creepiness of the book was that it was happening in a small town where everyone knew everyone else so well. That was more obvious in the original movie and was slightly lost in the remake. Plus, I like the optimistic ending of the original.

Dave, you don't need to see 1993 version. That was simple horror movie, it's not like the original.

When I was about 13 years old I saw 1978 version, and I agree. That was the ultimate end! I'd also forgotten that Kevin McCarthy had a brief cameo.

This is my personal thoughts.
The movie was made in 1956. So I think that optimistic ending was because of Communism and McCarthyism. The Body snatchers aliens were metaphor of Communists.
Dr.Bennell: "Now remember act emotionless, smile, nod, pretend everything is fine."
Becky: "Yes, yes I understand"
But then alien's invaded Becky's body...
Dr.Bennell: "You too?"
Becky: "Yes, join us it is the best way, I was nervous at first but now everything is simpler."
Dr.Bennell: "What is a life that is without emotion without love?"
Becky: "You'll come to see how unnecessary those things are."
The Body Snatchers are an allegory for Communism and McCarthyism. Red Scare finished in 1954. If this original was made in early '50s, and if it was unhappy ending like 1978 version, Walter Wagner and Don Siegel must have been accused as Communists! :eek:

Today I saw "The Invasion". It's 4th remake.
I already knew plot and ending, so at first I thought it's nothing new. But....
It was pretty good and at least it was better than 3rd version. Actually "The Invasion" had some creepy moments.
Nicole Kidman's acting was very good. Moreover, her frightened eyes were awesome.

But the ending disappointed me. It was too easy ways. I liked the last scene of 1978's version, because that was scary. Whole of "The Invasion" was thrilling. But it was not scary at all.

I haven't seen the most recent remake yet. When it makes it to cable, I'll watch it.
I was so young when I saw the first version, I barely remember it.
The second version was good, but I was both disappointed and spooked by the ending. I would explain, but I don't know who has seen the Donald Sutherland version and who has not, or whether knowing the ending of it would affect how one views the new version.
The third version was pretty worthless. Like Kenji said, it was "just" a horror movie, nothing more.

I love the classic horror flicks! Invasion of the Body Snatchers was great.I only remember seeing the first one, but it has been awhile. For some reason I remember them being refered to as pod people and only "switching" when the person being "snatched" was asleep. Is this acurate or do I need to watch the movie again?:confused:

It's accurate. Yeah, pod people were creepy.
But in this new version, "The Invasion", they were not pod people.

Call me a fuddy (OK-your a fuddy!) but I still think the original still gives you a whollop! Great film and cast!
In fact I'll put my laserdisc on in the next few days (there is a town called 'Red Bank' in the film when the pods were being loaded on the truck.
I lived by Red Bank , NJ.
In fact, in the original "The Tingler" Judith Evelyn in the film see's her Death Cert. in the bathroom window. It says her place of birth as Red Bank, NJ!
