Open Season - Scott Miller - 12-03-2006
I'm babysitting this weekend so I piled everyone into the van and we went to The Elvis Cinema to see Open Season yesterday. It won't win any awards, but there are enough funny moments to make it worth seeing. Ashton Kutcher's mule-deer, Elliott, is particularly good.
The soundtrack was a pleasant surprise as it was written and performed by Paul Westerberg of Replacements near-fame.

i have been listening to the soundtrack non-stop ever since it came out. Paul Westerberg is my favorite musician of all time and it ranks with his best solo work. definitely a must-hear. i was told that Paul, Tommy Stinson, and session drummer extrordinaire Josh Freese played a mini-set at the premiere of the film. they played 'Love You In The Fall', 'Right To Arm Bears', and the 'Mats barn burner 'I.O.U.'. i would give my right arm for video or audio of this.
i really want to see the movie but i'll probably just wait for the DVD.

Can't say anything too bad about Paul W. He's written some beauties both with the Placemats and for his solo albums.

Always cool to find a fellow 'Mats fan. I saw them several times through the years, but easily the most memorable was the first time. It was the Let It Be tour and they were still playing clubs. Soul Asylum warmed them up and no one really knew who they were yet, so the crowd was pretty mellow and I was only a few feet away from the stage. As soon as the Replacements hit the stage, the crowd surged forward effectively pinning me against the stage. By the third song, it had become a full-blown mosh pit, which I wanted no part of. The only way out was across the stage and I manged to bump right into Paul on my way across the stage.
Another time me and a couple of my buddies had a beer with Paul during the warm up act, but I was too awed to say much.
I haven't followed his solo career all that closely, I have 14 Songs, Suicaine Gratification, & Stereo, but I haven't listened to any of them in awhile-they're just to uneven for me.
Tommy hasn't been very prolific, but he has two great CDs: Bash-n-Pop's Friday Night Is Killing Me and his latest, Village Gorilla Head.
And finally, what is your personal fave? Mine is Pleased To Meet Me, with Let It Be a real close second.

i am exactly the same way. Pleased To Meet Me is my #1, VERY closely followed by Let It Be.
good god, if i had not been born in 1984 so that i could have somehow seen the Mats in their 'Hayday'(get the reference to Hootenanny?) my life would be complete.

"Color Me Impressed," Hootenanny is not exactly a household name. You're gonna have to "Take Me Down To The Hospital" if you keep throwing "Lovelines" like that around.

Actually this thread made me listen to my Sorry Ma/ Hootenanny(they both-and most of the Boink EP- fit easily on an 80 minute CD. Boink is still going as I type, "Nowhere is My Home" is worth getting the entire EP if you haven't already got it.
How they avoided being bigger, despite their antics, is a question that shall plague me until I exhale my final breath.
