A Scanner Darkly - Marc - 03-03-2006

The new preview for Linklater's latest film, A Scanner Darkly, is now up. It's based on Philip K. Dick's story. Watching the preview I have to say Linklater is a visionary when it comes to the creativity of film. He uses a similar "animation" technique he used in Waking Life. Anyway, you can check out the preview here.

I haven't seen Waking Life yet. Is it good?

I thought that the writing, or in some cases the dialogue as I heard that the actors were encouraged to create their own, was exceptional; it was almost stream of consciousness. The animation was certainly unique, but it became distracting to me after I while. it reminded me of the TV show Dr. Katz. As food for thought, I highly recommend it, but as a movie, a little less so.

Scott pretty much nailed my view as well. Thought-provoking, interesting dialog with the interesting animation made this a unique experience. I didn't get distracted by the animation like Scott however.

What a trippy, paranoid fantasy. Definitely a much tighter grasp of the animation process compared to WL. I really had no idea what to expect but was immediately sucked into its twisted version of the near future and it carried through the entire movie. It was cool to recognize the actors by sight rather than voice in an animated film and the cast delivered superb performances, especially Robert Downey Jr. and yes, I even thought Keanu was quite effective in his role. Heavy on dialogue and much funnier than I expected. I recommend it, but probably not for everyone.

I'm sure I'll enjoy it. I read "A Scanner Darkly" by P.K.D. a loooong time ago. It was one of his bizarre novels. I saw trailer and that visual & art were awesome.
