What was your first? - yellogecko - 09-07-2006 I have always been a fan of recurring characters in books...I have even been toying with one of my own for several years....Repairman Jack is one of my all time favorites. I was in a bookstore with my family a couple weeks ago looking for a new read when I stumbled across 'Hosts'. It was the only F Paul Wilson book on the shelf, and I had no idea who he was or who Jack was. I liked the synopsis, bought it, read it, and have been a fan ever since. I just finished 'The Tomb', loved it, and I've been eager to read the next RJ novels in order. I stumbled across this site while browsing for 'Legacies' and I have enjoyed reading thru the forums,and...this is my first time posting as well. Welcome to the board, yellogecko! I assure you'll have enjoyment more. Keep reading them. What was your first? - Chisel - 09-07-2006 My first exposure to Jack was the short story "A Day in the Life" from the Stalkers anthology. I still think that it is far and away the best story out of the lot of them. What was your first? - cobalt - 09-07-2006 Welcome Yellogecko and Chisel. Westlake's character's to me are a little too two-dimentional, but then that's just me. Thankfully, everyone likes something a little different, otherwise there'd be no copies of Robert Crais's latest Elvis Cole novels and no one would have written Water for Elephants. Oh yeah, I'm a big Elvis Cole fan although I believe that Crais tried to pull a fast one when he recently released a 2 parter that didn't warn the readers. Luckily I bought both at the same time or else I would have been mightily pissed off after finishing the first and having no conclusion. What was your first? - Lon - 09-24-2006 I read HOSTS two years ago or so, as something to keep the monotony of a mother-in-law visit under control. I knew from the first 50 pages that I was on to something special. I devoured THE TOMB and every RJ in paperback since then*, tossing in THE KEEP, some of THE BARRENS, and the story in THRILLER, too. I figure I'll toss in the rest of the Adversary books as I go, but I'll hold off on NIGHTWORLD till our host has finished the RJ arc leading up to it. SIMS looks good too. I'm also especially interested in the YA RJ series. I write a bit myself, including a couple YA novels I'm shopping, and I'm always reading YA anyway, so it would be great fun to see RJ in that medium. *Just picked up INFERNAL today as a matter of fact! Welcome, Lon! SIMS is indeed a very good book. So far, it's my favorite of the non-RJ, non-AC books of FPW's that I've read. I also started re-reading Infernal this morning. Needed my Jack fix. Good luck with your writing and if you ever feel like sharing, some of us here will surely be happy to read and comment. What was your first? - Lon - 09-25-2006 Thanks, Webby! I forgot to mention that I absolutely lurved MIDNIGHT MASS as it appeared in novella/novellette form on the audiobook of the vampire anthology that shared its title. Another case of checking out FPW's work in an antho and only a sampling of the others, I'm afraid... (But that reading gave me serious chills!) Welcome to the board, Lon. Now I'm reading revised Nightworld. If you intend to wait "Nightworld" until last RJ book.....well, that's okay. But don't worry. You'll enjoy "Nightworld" before you read last RJ book. Actually, I am. Sims was excellent sci-fi story. I'm sure you'll get into it. And if you haven't read "Black Wind" yet, I highly recommend it. What was your first? - cobalt - 09-25-2006 Don't forget FPW's earlier works. Blackwind and Virgin are two great stand alone novels. I'm reading Wheels Within Wheels now, part of the The LaNague series...........great science fiction there. |
