Totally melded right in with the adult Jack books, made me feel like I got to know Jack a lot better, and I thought everything flowed really naturally. And I like how his various skills he has as an adult are starting to be explained; makes the grown up Jack even more real. Was hoping that the tantalizing story the adult Jack told about Tom and the pistachios would be in here and it was ![]() And I loved the character of Weezy too, like everyone else said. I've often found very few likable female characters in many novels. All too often authors make them whiny, weak and prissy, or try to make them so strong-willed they become unrealistic and cold. Or else just plain annoying. Weezy on the other hand was an amazingly enjoyable character, both realistic and endearing. Thanks FPW ![]() Secret Histories - including spoliers - Oxenberger - 06-06-2008 Okay, so I also just finished Secret Histories. What can I say, GREAT!! Thanks FPW, awesome job. I really enjoyed the history and time period of this book as I grew up in Burlington County NJ and am also familiar with the Pine Barrens. Growing up we had an Atari 2600, and an Apple ][ computer! Jack would have been 4 years my senior and roughly my older brothers age. Very cool. Okay, so no one else mentioned this classic line from the book, which I thought was great: " ... Burned his tongue and nose and made him cough. Same with Scotch, although that tasted more mediciney. And beer . . . he didn't know about other brands, but Dad's Caling Black Label was bitter. He couldn't imagine ever linking beer. Give him a Pepsi any day." Ybor Gold anyone? Check out the following link I found with regards to Ybor Gold. http://www.sptimes.com/2003/08/15/Tampabay/Ybor_brewery_closes_Y.shtml Cheers, -Ox Secret Histories - including spoliers - Libby - 06-06-2008 Oxenberger Wrote:Okay, so no one else mentioned this classic line from the book, which I thought was great: Classic as in it is a great line, or as in it was somewhere else? And that was a great line! SO very much the kind of thing a teen would think, but not say. ![]() Secret Histories - including spoliers - Biggles - 06-06-2008 fpw Wrote:I fell in love with her. She started taking over scenes that should have been Jack's. I finally banished her to Baltimore for the weekend so she wouldn't get in the way. Banished to Baltimore! You monster! Well at least you didn't banish her to Philly or (horrors of horrors) CLEVELAND! Secret Histories - including spoliers - Biggles - 06-06-2008 fpw Wrote:Sheesh, you people have memories. Well, not all of us. My short term memory is history (huge pun intended), so don't worry about me. ![]() Secret Histories - including spoliers - Scott Miller - 06-08-2008 I echo many of the sentiments already posted on what a fantastic story it is, about the wonderful characters created or more fully fleshed out and about the foreshadowing of events to come. I am surprised that no has mentioned his final sting against Brussard; it ranks as one his best fix-its IMO. As someone who reads a lot of YA books, I can say that this should rope them in. One of the hallmarks of FPW's writing is his books are so fluid and easy to read that you don't realize that you're reading intelligent, complex stuff until after you begin to ponder what is was you just read; which is precisely what the YA's need. I was just having a discussion about female bosses and IMO, I've had several that seem to think they need to be ultra-bitchy to maintain their positions in the men's club. The two best bosses I've had have been female so it is not an across the board type of situation. Britfan Wrote:Best thing is it has got him reading more, he has read 2 Darren Shan Demonata books since finishing SH. I read the first of each of his series, Cirque Du Freak and Demonata, and liked them(my son is reading Cirque Du Freak at the moment and has Lord Loss waiting). |
