I have an old vhs copy of this film. I'd sure love to get it on dvd. It's aterrific film. Definitely my favorite Warren Beatty film. Again, the music on this film in intoxicating.

And some few were american Indians, like Mitsy Means, who was born on the Rosebud Reservation, and Geronimo "Jerry" Pinon, who looked like a teenage Goyakla.

Welcome to the board LarDog. That is an excellent top five! I've seen some try to argue that since Quigly is in Australia that it doesn't qualify as a western. I say B.S. Quigley was a western man that went to Australia to apply his trade during the old west. That's my two bits.
(I almost put "The Man From Snowy River" in my top five, but that was all Austalian.)

I am not referring to Indians alone. Mexicans, too, were in the way of the US expansion. Indians did not have a concept of owing the land. Mexicans did. Mexico extended into the territory on the map above, but western expansion chipped away at it until the Mexico we know today was all that was left. My point is: Latinos are growing so quickly in numbers that we are quietly taking back our territory. It's just a matter of time. And western movies indirectly refer to expansion. I tell my students of history that if they want to understand Manifest Destiny, just rent some westerns, especially Once Upon a Time in the West or Dances with Wolves. But I tell them to avoid The Alamo. Hollywood has yet to make that movie historically right.
