I'm not familiar with the Ruger -- no one shoots them in competition -- but the Beretta (and I assume you mean the 92FS as the 92F has been out of production for decades) has a very effective firing pin block, so carrying one with an empty chamber is not necessary.

The firing pin doesn't become "unblocked" until the hammer is nearly at the end of its rearward travel, (or the trigger is pulled to the point of sear disengagement in single action mode) and absitively posolutely will not fire . . . even accidentally.

I've done extensive work on Beretta's, even to the point of changing them to single-action-only mode. Although in single-action-only mode, you have to use the decocker which no longer decocks the gun, but acts as a safety instead.
