Libby Wrote:Actually, I was pleasently suprised at how clean this site is. Most forums have a bunch of swears and horrid propositions, or at least teenage ones. I have no problem with an occational swear, and that very well my be the case for the other minors on the board.Smile Also, I think that this copyright conversation is very childish, and if either of you want to continue being friendly towards eachother in the future, you may want to stop the escalation of this argument before it gets completely out of hand. I'm really sorry for the harshness, but I think that neither of you want to muck up your friendship.Smile

While I am glad that Bone's needless profanity does not offend you, Libby, there is little call for it when discussing such a simple issue. My 2-year old can argue a point without swearing.

I am sure we both appreciate the conciliatory gesture, but Bones is much too sophisticated to listen to such wisdom. And I'm much too stubborn.

Don't worry, I haven't taken Bones off my friends list yet. After all, if we're still friends after all the times he accuses me of killing his parents, then this little dust-up should do little to sour our relationship.

We'll punch each other in the arm and all will be forgiven.

Yes, and this board has the manners and grace to know who not to send any to, and when enough is enough.Smile On the chatrooms on Myspace and other teen chat rooms...OMG!!! Will they ever STOP?!?!?!?!??!?

In regards to the FAQ most of it was written by Mike (Aphew). I don't have any problem with it being adapted for a wiki entry and I doubt Mike would either. If he doesn't jump in and give approval in this thread I'll talk to him when I get home on Tues. and see if he has any objections.

If you make t-shirts from my work and sell them to everybody who wants one, that means I cant sell them for myself.

Coincidentally, a friend referred me to an article which says that there's legislation in the works to change exactly this: make it so companies can scavenge pics, etc off of individuals websites and use them for themselves ..... and then sue you (the originator of the material) for copyright infringement.

I can't find the article, but I'll keep looking.

Confusedhocked: That would just be wrong.

Bones and Wapitikev, four words for you both: World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). Also these four words: WIPO Copyright Treaty .

That was just an FYI so if you get into another "discussion" with someone about the internet and copyright, you'll know exactly what you're talking about. Wink

For the record, I agree copyright doesn't apply if you are editing a wikipedia entry and as long as you have the authors' permission to use the FPW FAQ you're good to go there.

Best of luck to you - many projects of this type have been started, none has ever been completed to the best of my knowledge. It would be nice if one actually got completed.

bones weep tedium Wrote:Who wrote the FPW FAQ? Is there anything in there that we can quickly adapt into wiki articles?

I think that the current state of criminal neglect goes to show how much nit-picking or attention of any kind FPW's books get subjected to over at wikipedia.

Wikipedia is the biggest online encyclopedia and at the top of nearly every google search you'll ever perfrom. It's not perfect, but it's a great place to start.

You're right about pride of place. I think it should be used to showcase his work, but to do it justice we would have to have more freedom than they allow on Wikipedia. Some of the suggestions that are brought up here are EXCELLENT but would be shot down by the almighty editors at Wiki. I brought up just one example...trivia. For this type of thing trivia is important and Wiki "frowns" on it. My contention would be to go ahead and work up the Wiki stuff but then have a more thorough and free-wheeling entry elsewhere.

bones weep tedium Wrote:I don't think you get what Copyright is.

Wikipedia is edited by anyone. if someone wrote something on wikipedia they did so with that knowledge. we can keep/delete/rewrite anything on wikipedia.

We can write whatever we like about Jack and FPW's books and as long as we don't copy any passages that's perfectly legit (FPW has said so himself)

If whomever amongst us who wrote the FAQ says so, we can copy and paste chunks straight from there to wikipedia. But seeing as though the FAQ is freely available to download from this site anyway we could prob get away with doing so without their permission and call it Fair Use. You can't steal something that's already free.

This is all true of course. I hate to beat a dead horse but there is nothing to stop the megalomaniacal editors from butchering whatever you put in there. In that event there is nothing you can do about it. My main point in bringing this up is just to point that out. No matter what we collectively think should be put in there it is subject to capricious editing. We just have to be aware of that and be prepared if the end result is not what we wanted. Using Wiki is fine but we should also see about putting up the EXACT entries that are wanted elsewhere as well.

With 500 entries by over 40 users, it certainly seems like anything posted on the Repairman Jack Wiki (to say nothing of any other FPW-related page) could last mere minutes before someone else messes with it.

So http://www.everything2.com is less volatile? I'll have to check it out.
