True Blood (Sookie Stackhouse) - Medusa - 09-18-2009

I'm getting the first season today! So I can finally watch Season 1 and then actually look at this thread! I loved all the books.

My wife and I recently devoured (take that as you like) the first season. I caught the series opener on HBO, and saw great potential. Openers are tricky: somehow, producers have to cover enough story ground to make it coherent and "hook" the audience...all while introducing us to the main characters. Tricky business.

The series works for me because I live in southeast Texas, close enough to south Louisiana that I know some Cajun folks firsthand (yeah, I know the series takes place further north, but what the hay? - - Cajuns be Cajuns). Anytime love, sex, struggle, and horror elements come together, there's a good chance that, with a new "spin" on vampires, something good comes crawling out of the pot.

The last author to come up with a really unique twist on vamps was British horror writer Brian Lumley, when he started writing his "Necroscope" series in the 1980's. If you love vampires but crave something new in their world, don't overlook "Necroscope" and its successors (be forewarned: you'll need about two-plus feet of space in your library if you get hooked. Mr. Lumley's still writing).

Anyhoo, our Sookie Stackhouse authoress up there in Arkansas has invented a really nifty new "take" on vamps.

I'm a fan of Lumley's work as well. The Necroscope and all that spun from Harry and his get, good stuff indeed. Vampires need to be feared, not sparkle. LOL

I hadn't thought about the Necroscope books in a long time. I loved most of them, but there was a clear point where the wheels came off the wagon for me.

I know. Some of the stuff from Starside got to be too boring.

I liked the subject pretty well, but the writing style turned me off. There were just far! Far!! Too many!!! Exclamation points!!!! For me to tolerate!!!!!!!!

Yo Road Dawg,

Big 10-4 on Lumley's "Necroscope." The thing I really liked about what Lumley did was: he honored all the old vampire lore, including geography, and added an entire new layer on "where they REALLY came from". I can almost see the old "sarge" when the idea first hit him. "M'dear, I need you to trot firsthaste to the men's undies dept...I just soiled my pantaloons with a hell of a new idea."

Well maybe it didn't happen exactly like that. But the idea was one heckuva good one. At the least, he probably paused for a goodly tip 'o Guinness or Glenlevet.

And some of those vampire Lords and Ladies were a hoot...laugh one minute, and cringe the next.
