Sean, the original version of The Haunting (movie) is so completely different from the newer one, they have virtually nothing in common except vague resemblances of plot. I agree with Maggers, the original is a classic and one of my favorite scary movies. The Changeling is my favorite of all time.

I like original version of War of the Worlds. Sometimes I re-watch it. Well, I'm worried about Spielberg version. I don't know why Spielberg did remake this movie. Until now, I just thought remake of War of the Worlds was Independence Day. Once, Spielberg made "Close Encounters of the Third Kind", "E.T.". They(aliens) were very friendly. But the aliens in War of the Worlds are very aggressive and cruel. I thought Spielberg loving aliens. That's why I don't know why he did remake this movie. What happened to Spielberg........?

Oh, I forgot this one! How could I forget this?! How could I forget twin girls ghosts, ghost in bathtub, and ghosts in ballroom? In 1980, it was scariest horror(ghost) movie. The Shining.
I'll never forget that Jack Nicholson. He use ax, and break the door, and he said, "Here's Johnny!!!!"
I also like TV mini-series.

If you're referring to the 1937 TOPPER with Carey Grant and Constance Bennet, I would hardly call it "menacing."
Same with TOPPER RETURNS.Those were great comedies, and for anyone who hasn't seen them, are, as you say -- well worth looking into.

I hope I'm not getting caught in that Ken V web of irony here, but by "menacing" I was referring to the black & white filming itself; for instance, I don't think "One Step Beyond" would have worked in color. I wasn't referring to the movies as "menacing" but to the b+w filming. I love b+w movies. I guess it's a throwback from growing up on Laurel and Hardy (remember the Laurel will short, where L&H have to spend the night in a spooky house? the spookiness was more spooky in b+w). Well, I doth protest enough. Ciao.
