Does Heath Ledger deserve the Oscar? - colburn0004 - 01-21-2009

AsMoral Wrote:I just read an article in entertainment Weekly about Heath and how he despised the Hollywood machine. Apparently he never wanted to be nominated for any award and hated attending the ceremonies.

He just wanted to make movies and live a normal life outside of Hollywood. Of course this is all posthumous coddling by his peers talking about how great of a guy he was, but it seems to ring true.

So, no, he shouldn't get the award because he wouldn't want it anyway.

Didn't he accept some award for brokeback mountain? I could be wrong but I thought He got something back when the movie was big :dontknow:. Would seem kind of funny they say he hated going yet the last big movie he was in he won something for. Am I wrong? Did he not get an award?

He was nominated for a Golden Globe and for an Oscar for BBM but didn't win. He won the Australian Film Institute Awards and a number of Critics Awards (NY, Chigaco, Las Vegas, etc.) for BBM. He also won an MTV music award for Best Kiss in a motion picture (shared with Jake Gylenhall).

Just now I heard Heath Ledger got nominated to Oscar on CNN.

And, Robert Downey Jr., too. :xd:

He may have gotten a Golden Globe...but according to the interviews he was contractually obligated to go to the awards shows to represent the film.

I have no clue what he won for...I am too lazy to go look. LOL.

I thought Brokeback was a boring, long drawn out film. It did have some great acting in it, especially from Michelle Williams.

Yes, it's too late for him, but he deserve the Oscar.

I don't know (Little Blues didn't see the flick, waiting to see the DVD with his pals), but I'd be surprised if he doesn't win it from the grave. Just because the Academy wants to say, "AAWW..." when his little daughter accepts it for him. :ooh:

I'd have to agree with some of the other posters in saying that I could really care less who gets it, its all just a strokefest for Hollywood anyway. they are pretty much all equally deserving of the award or equally undeserving, whichever way you want to put it.

Additionally, all this talk is just because he is dead, were he alive I doubt he would nominated at all.

After having said that, I admit I enjoyed his performance and "magic tricks".

Personally I think they ought to take a cue from george c. scott,"The whole thing is a goddamn meat parade. I don't want any part of it.

Can't agree with that last part, Picard. Every creative person wants--needs!--a pat on the back. We put our hearts on trial. It ain't that easy.

Maybe, or maybe not.....

I can say only that Heath Ledger's Joker was better than Jack Nicolsons'.

Kenji, I don't think Jack N. understood, for his role, that the Joker isn't just a clown--he's psychopath-evil. Why Batman (who's crazy too) hasn't snuffed him in the chances he's had mystifies me. I guess in a sick sense, Batman =needs= the Joker.

Thats the interesting thing about Batman, one could argue that each of his major villans is just a facet or twisted reflection of Bruce himself.

Mike, (may I call you Mike or do you prefer Blues?), I do belive creativity deserves recognition, as you said the creator is putting their heart/soul out there for the world to see at least in some cases. As for the George C Scott quote, I think it applies rather well in todays day and age. I mean honestly, they cover what the celebs are wearing to the show more than the show itself. It may have started out well meaning, but like most things it has deteriorated.
