Excellent choices so far - especially my favorite, Chris Cooper. Like Maggers, I've been a Chris Cooper fan since Matewan.
I'd add Robert Duvall to the list. The Godfather, Apocalypse Now, The Great Santini, Tender Mercies, Lonesome Dove, and Secondhand Lions to name a few brilliant, chameleonesque performances - the man is truly gifted.

Saw some people looking at this thread and was aghast to see that Sean Penn not mentioned by me. For my money, he is the finest actor of our generation and completely disappears into his roles. Yeah I know he's kind of a scumbag as a person(or at least that is how he is portrayed by the media)but that doesn't discount his abilities as an actor.
