smithers52 Wrote:I dunno about listing Die Hard here. It's cool you guys like the film but it's not a film that's oft-reviled. It's widely considered an action masterpiece (myself included) and (like Raiders of the Lost Ark) laid down the template for everything since. DH: with A Vengeance is cool flick in it's own right.

You are absolutely correct, and I realized after I posted that listing "Die Hard" here wasn't really accurate for all the reasons you stated.

I love it though! Big Grin

Brazil--Well, somebody said "hate" in other thread. But I like this movie. The one of reasons is Robert DeNiro. He was funny! Big Grin

Films you enjoy but everyone else hates - Flinx - 06-01-2005

smithers52 Wrote:Well no, I wouldn't say it's a guilty pleasure thread I had in mind, Maggers. I mean after all I feel no guilt in admitting that I enjoy A.I. or Titanic.

And anyways, a great list there, Flinx. I agree with all your choices. I enjoy Wayne's World 2 as well.

Remember Clint Eastwood's "Every Which Way..." films (the one with the orangutan)? I enjoy both of those films for their silly campy delights.
Forgot about Wayne's World 2.
Got both Every Which Way But Loose & Any Which Way You Can, love the Black Widows.
Now I'm at home I can go through my DVD collection;
Battle Beyond The Stars
Biggles Adventures In Time
Josie And The Pussycats
King Ralph
The Return Of Captain Invincible
Without A Clue
Water

They're not available here in DVD but thinking of buying them from the US;
The various Beach Party movies starring Frankie Avalon & Annette Funicello.

True Romance -
penned by Quentin Tarantino, directed by Tony Scott - starring Christian Slater, Patricia Arquette, Dennis Hopper, Christopher Walken, Gary Oldman, Samuel L Jackson, Brad Pitt, Chris Penn, Tom Sizemore, James Gandolfini (that's just off the top of my head Wink)
LOVE this movie!!

smithers52 Wrote:And I enjoy The Lost World. No it's not up to par with Jurassic Park but it succeeds at being an enjoyable dumb dinosaur film. That trailer hanging over the cliff is my fave setpiece from the three films. Plus we get to see twice as many dinos this time meaning twice the people getting eaten. And I love the final rampage through San Diego, it made for a better Godzilla film in 20 minutes than Devlin/Emmerich's Godzilla did for two hours.

By far my favorite of the JP trilogy is III. No cutesy kid shit and kick-ass dinos chomping everything in their path.

No way does Galaxy Quest qualify for this list, everybody I know who has seen has loved it including myself.

Good call on this one. But come on, you put Christopher Walken and Gary Oldman in a movie together, 9.99 times out of ten its going to be pretty good.

The 13th Warrior. I really liked this movie and have seen it a ton of times. There are some great lines in it.

Antonio Banderas character Ibn "I am not a warrior"
Viking: "You soon will be little brother"

After the heroes notice that the son of the ruler they are helping is plotting against them they decide to pick a fight to make an example of one of the sons henchmen. After the little Viking gets into a fight with him while building the fortifications around the village, they decide to duel to the death, Ibn asks the Viking what happened and why they are fighting, the answer "An engineering dispute".

And Army of Darkness. Most people like the Evil Dead 2 more but Army of Darkness is by far my favorite, once again great lines in this movie. When Henry the Red introduces himself to Ash as the ruler of his people while they are captured Ash tells him "I got news for you buddy, you ain't leading but two things, Jack and Shit, and Jack left town".

Why is Die Hard on this list? Don't most people like that one??? What a great movie!! Smile

I'll concur on A.I. I love that movie, though many people seem very negative about it. And I like Titanic. There. I said it.

Off the top of my head, I'll add:

THE BLACK HOLE -- badly written, stupid movie with a great soundtrack... and I love it. Must be a childhood holdover. Smile

GREMLINS 2: THE NEW BATCH -- I think this movie is a riot. It's almost a parody of the first one.

LAST ACTION HERO -- a movie taylor-made for Arnold fans with a sense of humor about Arnold, but probably no one else. I get the biggest kick out of this movie, especially the moment where they're in the video store and see the Terminator 2 ad with Stallone as the Terminator. Classic.

I enjoy Last Action Hero as well. It's got problems but certainly isn't the cinematic trainwreck people make it out to be.

And I'll second you on Gremlins 2. In fact I even pefer it over the original. It's a big, loud, silly cartoon that is so undeniably enjoyable. Definitely an underrated sequel.

I'll mention Temple of Doom as well. It's not up to par with Raiders (but then neither is Last Crusade; and that film has it's charms as well). That last half hour is the greatest stretch of non-stop action I've ever seen. I mean has any movie ever piled one action sequence on top of the other so successfully? I just love the minecar chase (the best use of minatures spliced with live action) and that rope bridge scene kicks so much ass. I'll add more and say that I love the film's dark, violent tone and just love what a cinema bomb Spielberg and Lucas drop by having the film abruptly shift into scenes of sacrifice and child abuse.
