Crisscross question--not really a spoiler - Noelie - 05-14-2004 For what it's worth, I'm allergic to chocolate, but I do eat it sometimes. I just deal with the itching that ensues afterwards. ![]() Crisscross question--not really a spoiler - nijimeijer - 05-14-2004 Well, I just finished the book a little bit ago. Potential errors be damned; this was an incredible book, top to bottom. In many of the Jack books, you care more about the situations than the characters involved. It's not that they're not well written--it's just that the nature of the "Jack Universe" makes the situations so much more . . . interesting. Crisscross is not like that. In this latest one, you care quite a bit for the secondary characters. As deeply as you care about the situations they find themselves involved in. Because of this, you care about the actions they take and the consequences that follow. The conclusion alone is so incredibly tightly woven, so perfectly laid out, it's magnificent. Well done, FPW. It mentions her having a chocolate mustache. Can you grow out of a chocolate allergy? I used to be ferociously allergic to dogs and cats when I was a kid. Nowadays they don't bother me a bit. I think she actually sneakingly picked up a piece of the chocolate and almost ate it and then decided she didn't want her face to swell up. And I remember Gia giving her the choice once and then being proud of her deciding not to take it. Steve D Maybe the chocolate is made with sugar alcohol. Yeah, that's the ticket. Vicky's allergic to real chocolate, not the sugarfree stuff. Don't you just love modern science? It's possible, but despite the years between the current book's printing and the '84 printing of The Tomb, in the story timeline, a little over a year is all that has passed. So maybe allergies aren't perfectly understood yet. (What is?) Do dogs bother you, Biggles? Other mammals? When you get right down to it, why would RJ show Vicky how to pierce the bottom of a chocolate to find out what kind of filling it has . . . if she's allergic to chocolate. It's simply a mistake . . . everybody makes them. Ken V. |
