How about Javert from "Les Miserables" (Victor Hugo)? Sure, he represented
the law, but what kind of creep hounds a man for 20 years for stealing a loaf
of bread? If he were a real character today he would probably be part of
the Bush administration.

How about Baron Harkonnen from the Dune series (Frank Herbert)? He
became far more interesting when he was working through Alia.

How about Faethor Ferenczy in Brian Lumley's Necroscope series? Or many
of the other "Vamphyri" in that series. Talk about well developed creepy
characters.

One of my personal favorites is Daniel Edward Flowers Bunkowski of the
"Chaingang" series by Rex Miller. The guy is a 6'8", 500 pound serial
killer who likes to eat the hearts of his victims. However, he does have
a soft spot for puppies and kitties. Woe betide anyone who would hurt a
puppy or kitty in his presence!!!!!

Another final villain for thought is Saladin Chamcha in Salman Rushdie's
"The Satanic Verses".

I think that was his darkest deed by far (although Paul has never divulged what evil things he might have done before Demonsong or between that and The Keep). I think actually that R-----m (I never write out his full true name, lest I summon him) must have been a very disturbed young boy. I think he probably used to torture and kill young animals. Because he was very bright, he studied all of the sciences as a boy, as well as arts and letters and rhetoric. This was before universities existed, but he would have been well-versed in both the healing arts and law. His most notable character trait is arrogance. He probably had a pet at one time, but one that was as ruthless as he, and which would not hesitate to rip him to shreds and eat him whole if he needed to.

He would probably be a PI lawyer if he had grown up in our day. :p

Actually, Carol has very vivid dreams while she is pregnant of what the R- guy has done!Pretty graphic and horrific!

"The slaughter of the innocents", although we can't be sure he was the One.

And the Vlad the Impaler dream. Yeah, I'm pretty sure it was R----- in the womb giving here these dreams, but I think they where his experiances!

I agree, Ken, that's what I thought was going on, too. The dreaded little embryo of R****** was reminiscing on his past earthly accomplishments and they manifested in Carol's dreams.
