order the books should be read - jimbow8 - 12-17-2004

APhew Wrote:Well, it's at least the end of the world as we know it. Not really the end of all things living or anything like that. In other words, it's not much of a spoiler, but it does show that things get a little... armageddony at the end.

I believe I was channeling Buffy towards the end there. Smile

Welcome to the board!
I think you were channeling a little REM in there too. Wink But I feel fine.

Welcome to the board, Lisa2. Hurry up and read the books! Hurry! Go now! Big Grin

order the books should be read - Ken Valentine - 12-18-2004

Lisa Wrote:Hi Lisa, Of course, if you remain on the board, you'll have to change your name to Gertrude or Beelzebub or something. Can't have two Lisas around.

:p The more Lisas the better! As long as your fingerprints don't match.

One place I worked had a total of 15 people. Five were named Dave, and three were named Robert. At another place, there were 10 people in the welding/fabrication shop -- I was Ken #3. Naturally, in both places, everyone was called by their last name. The most unusual place was PRO-FAB Race Cars -- eight people, and five of us were left-handed.

order the books should be read - Ken Valentine - 12-18-2004

maigen_obx Wrote:Hi, I'm very new here. I was wondering if someone would tell me what order the books should be read or direct me to the proper thread? Thank very much.

Lisa

I'll say, read them in the order you get them. Big Grin They're good enough that you'll want to read them again, and you can figure out the order any ol' time.

Actually, I tend to agree with Lisa#1. Published order is a very good way to go.

THE KEEP
THE TOMB -- The first Repairman Jack novel.
THE TOUCH
REBORN
REPRISAL
NIGHTWORLD

That's the Adversary Cycle.

Then, the rest of the Repairman Jack novels:
LEGACIES
CONSPIRACIES
ALL THE RAGE
HOSTS
THE HAUNTED AIR
GATEWAYS
CRISSCROSS
INFERNAL --not published yet.

Happy reading, and welcome to the board.

Did anyone else read Legacies first? I did, and instantly became a huge RJ fan. However, there was a problem in reading that novel first.
Because this is the only novel of the group that is not fantasy, but is basically straight fiction (the Rakoshi only only very vaguely alluded to) I was shocked to see the next book I read to be a fantasy horror book. I said to myself, "What the heck is going on?" It took a few more books until I realized that Legacies was the exception, not the other way around.
BTW- Anyone know why FPW deicded to make that book essentially straight fiction?

I would guess that it is basically to show a context. RJ is a real world type of guy who gets drawn into supernatural events regardless of whether he wants to believe in them. Legacies helps to establish that starting point (even though The Tomb came before it).

Paul was contracted to write one more medical thriller after The Select, Implant and Deep As The Marrow.

Story goes that he was a bit jaded with them, and realised a new RJ novel could be fun, but not wanting to break the contract he based it around the Aids centre and made the client a doctor.

Incidentally, The Foundation (Select), Implant, Deep As The Marrow and Legacies are the four books published in the UK under the pseudonym Colin Andrews. And that is a whole 'nother story. They were also the last books of Paul's published in the UK.

I tend to disagree with the majority here about published date...

*** SPOILER ***

You have to highlight this spoiler to reveal the information within.

I already read them in that order and I feel like it sucked! Because I read NightWorld last, I know a few things... I.e. Gia, Vicky, Julio, and Abe (not to mention Jack) all make it. This sucked for me during some of the RJ books, because a couple of times I was borderline thinking each and every one of them might not make it through this book. However, that thought was fleeting, because I knew that they all lived through NightWorld, which is the ending.

*** End SPOILER ***

So, I say, the order is not important, as long as you read NightWorld last!
