Kirksville is the County seat of Benton County, and Benton County touches Putnam County, which is to the Northwest.
The County seat of Putman County is Unionville, and my great grandfather had the first house in what later became Unionville, Missouri.
Great grandfather J.S.C. Valentine moved there from Lima, Ohio sometime in the early 1850's. And my grandfather's oldest brother was the first birth in Unionville -- in 1854.
My father was born in Unionville in 1916 and the family moved to Colorado in 1919. (My grandfather was born in Unionville in 1872.)

I know all of those places well. I was born in Hannibal (Marion County). I grew up in Chillicothe (Livingston County), and spent four years living in Mexico, MO (Audrain County). Small world!

One of these days I intend to go back there and see Unionville. I understand it's a fairly small farming community, but I've also heard that there's a statue of one of my ancestors in town, and I'm curious to see if there actually is one, and of so, who it is.

You should definitely go visit some time. Missouri is one of the most oft-overlooked states in terms of natural beauty and downright friendliness. While I love living in the D/FW area, I find myself at times longing for the simplicity of rural life in northern Missouri.

And for the same reasons: natural beauty -- Rocky Mountain National Park (and Estes Park) is only an hour away -- it's a slower pace of life, and the people are friendly.
