Are you familiar with Andrew Vachss' BURKE series? Good stuff. Burke is a lot like Jack (though without Jack's sweet and forgiving nature.) Give it a try. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

I only suggested the Sacketts because you seemed to be looking for a series. He also has 6 or 7 volumes of short stories and about 50 or 60 novels. He was recruited by the Rangers because the didn't want to fight him.

Needless to say, I approve of the the Sackett saga. (It extends from pirates to woolly mammoths, to hidden gold, too Logan Sackett that is perhaps the best outlaw in existence.)

Hey now, just because I didn't read The Sacketts doesn't mean I haven't read any L'Amour. I haven't read westerns in years but Louis was my favorite when I was. Hondo, Flint, Showdown at Yellow Butte, The First Fast Draw are titles that I remember off the top of my head and I did read the first couple of Scaketts but they really weren't westerns at all-not bad but not westerns.

HA! I knew L'Amour would be a tough sell but I figured I'd throw it out there and see what the reaction was. I always hated westerns as a kid- I was more of a Monster Week on the 4:30 Movie kind of guy, but I am thankful I discovered L'Amour because he is truly one greatest writers to come out of America and I was hoping to open that door for someone else.

The Jack Reacher series is fantastic. Ive had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Child and sharing adult beverages with him and he is just a great guy, has a ton of knowledge about seemingly everything, and generally just fun to be around.
Barry Eisler has a series about a half japanese, half american assassin called John Rain, and the books are all great reads.
The Pendergast novels by Douglas Preston and Lincoln ChILD are also fun reads.

I echo the comments on Lee Child's Jack Reacher series...great stuff. I would also suggest Steve Berry's books featuring the Cotton Malone character (Federal agent/lawyer turned bookseller...c'mon...that's got to be good!). Also a fan of Neil Gaiman's darker books (American Gods, Neverwhere) but not so much on the lighter stuff (Anansi Boys, The Graveyard Book), with the exception of Good Omens (hilarious book).
