It was written by Doc Pomus, a NY kid. He and his partner Mort Shulman wrote =many= great songs. But Doc was crippled-up by polio as a child. He wrote the song after his wedding. Doc couldn't take the traditional dance with his bride. He watched, in his wheelchair, as his brother danced in his place.
