Welcome to the board, Tim and Matthew. Don't worry, if you keep posting regularly, we will soon forget that you are newbies and give you as much crap as the regulars. Of course, in order to be fully accepted into the inner circle you need to attend a G.U. (Orlando 2005).

Thanks guys!!

Looking forward to the "board regular" toilet swirlie at a G.U.

Hopefully there are drinking games involved?

I could probably write an entire book on the subject if someone else hadn't already beaten me to it. I can't remember the guy's name, but the book was called "Understanding Japanese Comics" or something like that. It was his doctorate thesis. I've got it in a moving box somewhere. I'll unpack it one of these days.

My not-book-length opinion is that it's a simple, clear art style that is easy to understand. I think the biggest appeal is that it's something new and different to most readers who are bored with the look of traditional American comic book art. There's more to it than that, but that's the quick version.

Can I have my doctorate now?

Makes sense. Thanks Matthew!

Thanks for the warm welcome and a special thank you for the grammatical correction from Ken. I am ashamed by my ineptitude. I managed to avoid hazing in high school and college, so I guess I'm due. Just don't hurt my hands, okay?

I guess if the mulletized Jack were to move to a place he would fit in with the locals it would be here to West Virginia, the mullet capital of the world. He would have to change his form of business from repairman to car towing, though. Thus the new and improved Towman Jack.

I grew up in SW PA, not far from Wheeling, so I know whereof you speak. In WV, Jack wouldn't have to hide his guns, and he could get all the practice he needed at the local dump. I think Abe would run a still if he were in WV, don't you?

I think you may have combined the titles of two extremely popular books on similar subjects:

Understanding Comics by Scott Mcloud
Manga! Manga! The World of Japanese Comics by Frederik L. Schodt

Both are very, very good. I don't know if either is the one you mentioned, but they should be read anyways.

Being the sheltered high school student I am, I must ask what a GU is. I may have known before but I have forgotten.

"Manga! Manga!" is EXACTLY the one I was thinking of. I'm sure it's in the same moving box as "Understanding Comics". I'll dig them out some day.

As opposed to: "Mangia! Mangia!" a book about Italian food.

GU stands for "Grand Unification" and refers to two things:

1. It's the official name for the way FPW ties all his books and stories together
2. It's also the name we adopted for our yearly get together of FPW and his fans. You can see pics from this year's GU (held Feb 5-8, 2004) here: http://www.ghosts.org/rj/gu3/gu3.html

GU stands for Grand Unification. Basically, it's an annual party where FPW and his fans get together.
