Casino Royale Review (no spoilers) - Kenji - 11-21-2006

Susan Wrote:My hubby and I went to see the new Bond movie yesterday and loved it. And we never agree on movies! What a terrific flick.

First, you should know I'm a huge James Bond fan. I've seen every movie and even read some of Ian Fleming's work. Sean Connery is my favorite Bond because you knew his masculinity wasn't an act.

Casino Royale is unlike any James Bond movie you've ever seen. And I mean that in every way, from the first frame to the last. The movie starts with James Bond just getting his double "0" status and he's raw and hungry. I saw the 1967 version of this movie (David Niven was James Bond-great actor, terrible casting) and it can't hold a candle to this one.

Daniel Craig's Bond is dangerous and 100% male with no apologies or time for political correctness. This guy can act!

Ladies, you'll love this film. You know how almost every Bond movie has at least one nude or partially nude Bond girl? Well, how about a nude Bond? Yeah, baby!

Even if this wasn't a Bond movie, I'd still love it. Terrific action, beautiful scenery, excellent plotting and top-notch acting. My only criticism is that it was about twenty minutes too long.

If I were to rate this movie from a scale of 1 to 10, it would be a 9.

So if you love Bond as much as I do, but thought the only "true" Bond was Sean Connery, you need to give Daniel Craig a try. This guy has got it!

Susan

PS: I highly recommend seeing this movie in a DLP Cinema Theater. Stunning!

I hadn't schedule to see this new Bond movie. But as I read your review, it's sounds good. You changed my mind. I'll go to see it. Wink

And I loved Connery. I'd watch him brew tea. But this one was on a different level. THIS Bond is genuinely dangerous. You feel it on a level I never did with the others.

Dare I say it, THIS Bond has some RJ tendencies......

I agree! He's dangerous and doesn't deal well with authority.

That does my ego a world of good Big Grin

Nice to see you back posting, Susan. I haven't wanted to see a Bond film this much since Licence to Kill, and your review turned the screw one more notch.

Sod the overdraft, I'm gonna try and see it this weekend.

How do you Brits view Timothy Dalton in the grand scheme of Bond? Does this mean that you were never impressed with Brosnan?

Aww ...but it makes me and Lisa feel great! Big Grin

Susan, can't wait to see this new Bond. Daniel Craig was terrific in "Munich" in a quiet role, and he was the ONLY good thing in "Infamous," where he played Perry Smith. In fact, Craig's Perry Smith was better than Clifton Collins, Jr. who played Perry Smith in the awesome "Capote." Collins was good, but Craig brought a sexy menace to Smith in "Infamous." I suspect his Bond is infused with a fabulously sexy menace.

I think I'm in a minority. After my clownish namesake, Roger (who I loved when I was a kid), I thought Dalton was really serious and gritty as Bond. And that is how I like him. So yeah, Dalton is my favourite. Most think he was an also ran.

Brosnan was okay, Goldeneye was entertaining, Tomorrow Never Dies was Brosnan's finest two hours (thanks in large part to the best ever Bond girl, my Michelle), and then it went badly wrong. You know something is amiss when they name a character for the benefit of a bad pun.

So Craig being brutal and gritty? Bring it on!!!

I don't remember much about those, but I remember thinking that Dalton was more serious and intense than Roger Moore and his one-liners. So I'd probably agree with you. Maybe I should watch them again.

I like Goldeneye, but the rest were pretty crappy, imo.

I liked Terry Hatcher A LOT at the time (Lois & Clark), but I thought that movie sucked!

Let's not even mention Denise Richa ..... D'oh!!!! Big Grin

I promise you won't regret it, Dave. This movie rocks. Try to see it in a digital theater, it really makes a difference.

Even my wife who refused to see a Bond movie for years said she loved this film. Daniel Craig has been excellent in every movie I have seen (ie: LayerCake, Munich) and he is every bit James Bond, certainly more so than anyone since Connery. The scene when Bond steps out of the ocean brought a gasp from my wife...I think she will see another Bond film after this.
