I believe he was a collie in the books but my understanding is that he could have changed into whatever kind of dog he wanted to be. He just happened to pick collie.

[spoiler]In the books Sam is a true shapeshifter; that is, he can shift into any animal he chooses. He prefers the collie, and I'm pretty sure (been a while since I read the first book) that it's because the collie is non-threatening.[/spoiler]

[SPOILER]I recently re-read the book where he turns into a lion, which makes me wonder why the werewolves think that THEY are the top badasses. Seems to me that anyone who can change into a lion, tiger, panther, etc. would be at least just as much of a badass as the ones who can turn into a wolf.[/SPOILER]
